Searching and Evaluating Web Sites | Effective Assignments Using Library Sources | Goals and Outcomes | Library Instruction | Lecture Notes The library is an important part of the college experience. How to find, interpret, and use information are vital skills in todays world. Employers welcome "information literate" college graduates who possess such skills. The library component of English 100 and Agriculture 100 is designed to teach students basic research skills using print and online resources in the library and on the Internet. The UHH instruction librarian is Thora Abarca. To complete this course, you must have access to the Internet. Internet access is provided to students in the library and in computer labs on campus. 1. Using Explorer (IE) or Netscape (version 4.0 or higher), go to: http://webct2.hawaii.edu/ (NOTE: If you have login problems with Explorer, verify that http:// is entered in the window.) 2. Select "Create Account." 3. If you already have a WebCT account for another class (version 3.x) skip to #4 in these instructions. If you DO NOT have a WebCT account from another class, create one by selecting "Create My WebCT." Fill in all the required information.
Once you have entered this information, you will receive a "Course Added" message. Follow the "Go to course" link to get started. 4. If you DO have a WebCT account (version 3.x) from another class:
DOING THE WORKBegin at "Start Here" on the home page and read through the instructions before you start. Work sequentially through the modules, beginning with "Types of Information." WebCT has been programmed to advance you to the next module only when you have completed the review quiz at the end of the current module with a grade of 80 or greater. You are allowed unlimited attempts for module quizzes. WebCT provides correct answers to any that you might get wrong. If you dont make 80 on the first try, youll have the answers to make 100 on the second try. GRADINGThe library component may be worth 5% - 10% of your final English 100 or Agriculture 100 grade depending on your instructor. To successfully complete the course, you must: 1. Complete all WebCT modules before your second session with the librarian. You will not be permitted to take the final quiz unless you have completed all of the module quizzes. 2. Complete the online WebCT course evaluation before you meet for the second session. WebCT course evaluations are confidential and anonymous. 3. Take a final quiz during the second session. Students who miss the second library session must make arrangements with the library instructor to take the Final Quiz within 5 days of the second session. A Very Important Concept here is communication! If you are experiencing problems with the program, dont wait until the second session to let the library instructor know! The library instructor is available to help you if you have any questions or problems. WebCT email is the best way to contact your library instructor. If you cannot access the WebCT account you set up in class, try creating another account. If you are still encountering trouble, contact the instructor at the following external email address: tconner@hawaii.edu or call the library's Instruction Office at 974-7343. Help is also available at the librarys Reference Desk.
