Library PC Use Policies
This is an overview of the PC resources available for use in the Mookini Library.
Federal Government Documents users, please click here.
Locations of PCs
The Library has more than 80 PCs on the Main Level, loaded with the Microsoft Office 2003 software package, Acrobat Reader, Internet access, and other programs. ACS maintains a list of software available in PC labs on campus.
All library computers are networked to black & white printers available near the Reference Desk, in the PC Lab, and in the Library classroom and a color printer near the Reference Desk. More information about printing is available below.
Users must log on with their “UHHL account.”
- The Main PC Lab has more than 35 PCs. It is located just past the elevators on the Main Level.
- The Library Classroom (Room 233) has more than 25 PCs which are available when there are no classes scheduled.
- An additional 20 computers are located on the Main Level, just to the right of the Reference Desk.
- Four Macs are available
on the Main Level in Room 238 inside the PC Lab. See the Circulation Desk for access.
- Two PCs in front of the Reference Desk are limited to issuing UHHL accounts and searching the Voyager catalog and have a 10-minute time limit.
- Two computers on the Upper Level are restricted to searching the Voyager catalog and have a 10-minute time limit.
Also available :
- two scanners located on the Main Level in Room 238 inside the PC Lab. See the Circulation Desk for access.
- a Station equipped for use by people with disabilities. The Library houses an accessible PC in the Reference area with an adjustable table. Software available includes PC Speak and Zoomtext. Headphones are provided at the station. The stations are part of the UH Voyager network, which requires a login and password. They are also part of the Library’s print network, so the regular fee for printing applies. Library staff can assist users with logging in, loading the programs, and using the print network. It is understood that anyone using the station will have received prior training elsewhere. Those affiliated with UHH should call the University Disability Services at 933-0816 for assistive technical training. HawCC affiliates should call 974-7741.
Laptops
- Laptops for Check Out
Laptop computers with wireless Internet access may be checked out from the Circulation Desk for use within the Library.
-
Wired Carrels
Laptop lines connecting to the Internet are available for students with their own laptops. The stations are located on the Main Level in the grey carrels near the DVDs.
Applying for a UHHL Account
You must be a registered UH student or current faculty/staff to use the PCs in the Library. Use the self-issue terminals in front of the Reference Desk to get a UHHL Account which enables you
to use computers in PC labs all
over campus.
Once you have a UHHL account (consisting of a username and password),
you can logon to campus PCs:
-
Press Ctrl + Alt + Del keys.
-
Enter username and password.
Students should save their work onto their Z: drive server space or pen / flash / USB drive (available for purchase at the campus bookstore and at the Circulation Desk). Simply plug the pen drive into the USB port or extension cable. Note that all Z: drive server space is deleted at the end of every semester.
It is very important to logoff properly from the system. Should
you leave your account active after you have left the Lab, others may
be able to change your preferences or tamper with your account. To logoff:
-
Click on "Start" and choose "Shutdown."
-
At the "logoff uhhl..." prompt,
click on "Yes."
-
The workstation will log you off and reset itself for the next user.
Printing
All PC Labs on campus charge 7¢ for each page printed. The PHAROS printing system accepts the new student ID card (available since Spring 2004 from the Campus Center Office) or the “single card” debit card, which can be purchased at the dispenser located near the Reference Desk for $1.00. Users add value to the card through the card dispenser or the library’s black & white photocopiers. As printouts are made, the cost of the printouts is subtracted from the amount on the card.
To prevent individuals from accidentally printing another's work, all
print jobs are password-protected.
To print a job:
-
Choose "Print" from the program you are running.
-
Click "OK." Wait a moment.
-
At the "PHAROS Popup Client" window, enter a password of
your choice and a job name. Click "OK."
-
Go to the print station, insert your Single Card, select your job
and click "Print."
-
Enter your password. Your job will be printed and your card charged
7¢ per page.
-
To eject your card, click "Log off."
PHAROS has a time-saving feature called "last answers." If
you want to use the same password and job name on future print requests,
simply click on "last answers" and your print request will appear
at the printing station. This information is saved in your account profile
until you change it by entering another password and job name.

Hawaiian Language Support
Hawaiian fonts and an online Hawaiian dictionary are available on PCs
in the Lab. You may download
the fonts developed by the UHH Hawaiian Language Center onto your personal
computer. Instructions on how to use the Hawaiian fonts in Microsoft Word
2000 can be found at http://www.olelo.hawaii.edu/pdf/uhh-msword.pdf.
You need to configure MS Word according to the instructions before you
use the Hawaiian fonts. Once you complete configuring, the setting should
be saved in your account profile so you do not need to configure it again.
