Library Laptop Loan Program at UH Hilo Library
The library now circulates library-use-only laptop computers to UHH and HawCC students, staff, and faculty for three-hour loan periods. Each laptop has the ability to connect to the wireless network available throughout the library.
Laptops are available at the Library Circulation Desk on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be reserved in advance. You must have a valid UHH or HawCC account, a current, valid, government-issued photo ID, and a UHHL username and password to borrow a laptop. There is no charge for this resource.
Library staff are very excited about this resource, and we know you are too. Because of the expected demand for these computers, we want to ensure that they are issued to users who know how to operate them properly and will care for them while in their possession.
Users will be asked to sign a borrower's agreement acknowledging and agreeing to the following:
- Laptops are loaned for a 3-hour periods (no renewals). Use of the laptops is restricted to library use only, meaning you cannot take them from the building.
- The Circulation Desk will issue a laptop carrying case. Whenever transporting the laptop be sure that it is in the case, the screen securely snapped down, and the case zipped up completely. Do not carry it like a book, as other objects you are carrying may damage the flat-panel surface.
- Do not remove any components from the laptop.
- If you have any problems with the laptop, return it immediately to the Circulation Desk. Do not attempt to make repairs on your own.
- NEVER leave the laptop unattended … for any reason. If you must leave your carrel or desk, take the laptop and the carrying case with you. Thefts do happen in the Library. Since you are responsible for the laptop, and will be charged for repairs or replacement costs, you, and not your friends, should keep an eye on it at all times.
- The laptop screen is very sensitive and can be easily damaged if not handled properly. Never touch the screen or attempt to clean it for any reason.
- Use laptops for word, data, and spreadsheet processing at your own risk, and save your work to either your UHHL drive space, your pen drive, or to a blank CD or DVD (not provided by Library). All files left on the laptop will be deleted. The library will not be responsible for lost or damaged work.
- Since the laptop allows the burning of CDs or DVDs, you should be aware that the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies, or other reproductions of copyrighted material. You are liable for any infringement.
- Users who do not return laptops within the 3-hour-limit will be fined $1.00 for each hour or fraction thereof that it is late.
