Access to the Collection

The Edwin H. Mookini Library is open to any individual who wishes to use materials inside the Library building and who is in compliance with our Conduct in the Library policies. Many materials are available on open shelves for self-retrieval. Selected materials are kept in protective storage and may not be available to all library users or during all operational hours. Loan Periods

UH System Libraries Loan Periods and Fines & Fees.

The loan policies below apply to UHH and HawCC faculty, staff, and students. Library users who are not affiliated with UHH or HawCC are welcome to check out most items under the same conditions with some exceptions (no Reserve items or audiovisual materials). See Library Services to Community Users for more information. You may also check with the Circulation Desk if you are unsure about the borrowing policy for a particular item.

Returning Books

When the library is open, you may bring the book to the book drop at the Circulation Desk or use the after hours book drop. Do not return a checked-out book to the shelf or place it on a book truck! You will be fined for the item if it is not put in the drop or returned to the Circulation Desk.

Reserve items must be returned to a Circulation Desk staff member to avoid fines.

Fines, Lost Books and Library Cards

Borrowers should be aware that outstanding fines or other financial obligations may hold up registration, graduation, and/or borrowing privileges. Fines are computed on a daily basis, including weekends and holidays. The maximum fine is $10 per item. When the fine reaches the maximum, the item is declared lost. When the item is declared lost, the borrower will be charged the maximum fine, the lost item replacement cost, and a processing fee. You may appeal for your fines and fees by downloading the Circulation Appeal Form.

Lost Cards

Students, faculty, and staff are assessed a replacement fee for replacing lost ID's.

Holders of other library cards are assessed a $3.00 replacement fee by the library.

Overdue Notices

Please return library materials by the due date. As a courteous reminder, the library will mail an overdue notice. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not mean fines are cancelled. 

Confidentiality of Patron Records

The Edwin H. Mookini Library complies with the State Attorney General's opinion on library record confidentiality and the American Library Association's Policy on Confidentiality of Library Records and the American Library Association's Guidelines of Confidentiality and Coping with Law Enforcement Inquiries.

Exit Control

The library has an electronic detection system installed at the exit. If the alarm sounds as you exit, you are required to return to the Circulation Desk. Disciplinary action will be taken if someone attempts to remove uncharged items from the library.
