Book Donations

Donated library materials must meet the standards of quality and relevance to the academic programs offered at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Community College. The Mookini Library welcomes gifts that support the instructional and research programs of the University and College. In accepting gifts, the Library follows the procedures stipulated in UH Administrative Procedure A8.620, "Gifts." The Library does not conduct appraisals.

Adopt-a-Book Program

The Edwin H. Mookini Library's Adopt-a-Book program provides a unique opportunity to combine a love of books and learning with the desire to honor, celebrate, or memorialize the special people in our lives. A $25 Adopt-a-Book donation, up to $249, is recognized with a personalized bookplate in one or more books, and supports our ongoing efforts to develop an outstanding library collection, staff, and resources, meeting the academic needs of the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Community College.

Donations of $250 or higher provide the donor with the opportunity to work with a librarian to select an academic subject area in which titles will be selected for recognition in our Adopt-a-Book program.

For more information about the Adopt-a-Book program, please visit this web page.

Endowment Accounts

Endowments secure the future of the Edwin H. Mookini Library. An endowment account allows for the expenditure of net earnings while protecting the gift principal in perpetuity. The University of Hawaii Foundation has established the following minimum levels for these specific endowment accounts:

  • A named librarian or curator (minimum gift $500,000)
  • A named library collection (minimum gift $500,000)
  • A named library fund (minimum gift $100,000)

In addition, donors can create a perpetual book fund endowment for a specific area of academic study. Books acquired annually with endowed funds are identified with custom-designed bookplates. A minimum gift of $10,000 is required to establish a new book endowment account.

Naming Opportunities

The Edwin H. Mookini Library, the largest academic library on the Big Island, is a beautiful, state-of-the-art library facility with many specialized rooms available for named giving opportunities. Support for areas such as a group study room, the library instruction classroom, and meeting rooms will be recognized with special signage.

Monetary Donations

Most monetary donations are for immediate use and may be directed to a specific program or need at the Edwin H. Mookini Library. All monetary donations are processed through the University of Hawaii Foundation and are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law. Unrestricted gifts allow the staff of the Edwin H. Mookini Library to utilize the funds in the areas of greatest current need.
