Library Academic Appointments

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN, University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hilo, Hawaii, July 2002 to date. Current responsibilities include budget, and program planning, program review, organizational planning, executive leadership, vision, direction, advocacy and accountability for all aspects of the Library and Graphic’s programs and services for UH Hilo and HawCC. Responsible for personnel review and appraisal, staff development, communications with the University, Community College, community, general public and Hilo local community.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN, Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, Florida, June 1997 to July 2002. Responsibilities included: Leader of the FGCU Reference Team, and member of the Library Leadership Team, Library Faculty Team, Technical Services Team, Library Instruction Team, Serials Management Task Force, and Collection Development Team. Experience with academic collection development, instruction, and liaison activities. Actively participated in a diverse assortment of University, local consortia, State, and ALA committees. Received promotion in rank from Associate University Librarian to University Librarian, Fall 1999. Appointed Reference Team Leader with increased supervision and workload responsibilities in 1998.

SERIALS DEPARTMENT HEAD, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida, January 1993 to May 1997. Responsible for managing a combined technical and public service Serials Unit including conversion project supervision, annual report coordination, and intra-departmental communications. Accountable for the integrity and quality of serials control and record management for 4,500+ current serial titles including holdings data, receipt, and claiming. Coordinate branch library claims and problem solving. Supervise 2 part time professional librarians, 5 paraprofessionals, approximately 120 hours of student assistant workers and assist in providing work assignments for other Technical Service paraprofessionals upon request. ACTING SERIALS DEPARTMENT HEAD, January 1993 through October 1993.

SERIALS LIBRARIAN, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida, January 1990 - December 1992. Supervised all activities of a combined technical and public service Serials Unit of varying staff size. Staff annually accomplished checking-in 160,000 items, claiming 1,300 issues, updating 8,000 records, assisting 25,000 patrons, circulating 200 pieces, and reshelving 223,000 items.

SERIALS CONTROL LIBRARIAN, University of Miami Law Library, Coral Gables, Florida, May 1987 - December 1989. Managed all operations of a combined Serials / Acquisitions Department including binding and physical processing with a staff of 2 professionals, 4 paraprofessionals and various student assistants. Supervised loose-leaf filing for 900+ subscriptions contracted out to a professional filing service, and approved and fund coded all invoices for a $1.3 million budget.

OTHER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR, Florida Gulf Coast University, College of Arts and Sciences, August 1999 to date. Co-designed a 3 credit undergraduate course entitled Effective Learning for the FGCU special admission students in an attempt to help improve retention and academic success for under-prepared students. Curriculum for course received recognition at an international education conference on the Freshman Experience in 1999. Taught the Effective Learning, Styles and Ways of Learning, or Connections course on a per need basis for the general education program.

ADJUNCT PROFESSOR, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida, April 1994 to date. Invited guest lecturer for various Master of Library Science courses including; Library Management, Introduction to Reference Services, and Collection Development. Designed a three credit graduate course in Serials Management that is offered on a per need basis. Currently Responsible for teaching a variety of courses for the Ft. Myers extension program, including Foundations of Library and Information Science and Research Methods. Adjunct Professor with the East Coast Extension Program, from April 1994 to May 1997.

ADJUNCT INSTRUCTOR, Florida Atlantic University, Division of Continuing and Distance Education, Boca Raton, Florida, October 1993 to May 1997. Designed a 6 hour CEU Continuing Education Course and accompanying 47 page workbook entitled Learning How to Study for the Adult Re-entry Program. Responsible for facilitating course 1 to 3 times annually and periodic curriculum updating. Designed a 6 hour CEU Continuing Education Course entitled Implementing Successful Volunteer Programs.

PROGRAM SPECIALIST, Marriott Stratford Court, Boca Raton, Florida, April 1994 to March 1996. Designed and facilitated an adult literary discussion program for a senior living community. Responsible for researching biographical information, selecting reading materials, incorporating multi-media presentations, and encouraging lively discussions.

SERIALS CONSULTANT, SIRS, Boca Raton, Florida, July 1996 to May 1997. Provide guidance and serials expertise in developing a combined acquisitions and serials module for a library OPAC.

VOLUNTEER FAMILY LITERACY SPECIALIST, Aid to Victims of Domestic Assault, Delray Beach, Florida, August 1994 to January 1996. Co-designed a monthly family literacy program involving children's storytelling, reading assistance and various additional activities. Acquire gift reading materials for center's library. Trained and certified Laubach Literacy Volunteer.

ALA LIRT, currently serving as the LIRT Liaison on the ALA Recruitment Assembly Committee, and as a member of the 2005 Conference Programming Committee for the annual conference that will be held in Chicago, 2005.

ALA COUNCIL, currently serving as the Hawaii State Chapter Councilor through 2005.
