Books are Continuing to Move

We are continuing to move books. If you are having difficulty finding something, please don't hesitate to ask at the Reference or Circulation Desks.

Books with call numbers N-Z are on to the 3rd floor before the Periodical Backfiles.

Books with call numbers E-M are still on the 1st floor.

Books with call numbers A-D are on the 2nd floor.

Most of the Hawaiian Collection is on the 2nd floor.

Please note that other areas of the second floor are still off limits to everyone except library staff.  For your own safety, please do not enter the barricaded areas.

Phase 3 Preparation

We are beginning to move books. Books with call numbers at the end (Z, V, U, T, S, R, Q) are being moved to the 3rd floor between the Periodical Backfiles and the Hawaiian Collection. Next week, the Hawaiian Collection will be moving from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor and the books with call numbers P will be taking its place.

Newspaper backfiles are now located behind the Reference Collection between the Sorting Shelves and Government Documents.

Stay tuned for future changes...

Phase 2 Begins

The library entrance is now located on the west side of the building across from student housing and between PB-11 and UHH Administration.

The Main Level will be closed until Spring 2008. Maps of the Upper Level are available at the Reference Desk.

All library service desks, including Reference, Circulation, Reserves, and ISL / ILL are on the Upper Level. All library administrative offices are also on the Upper Level.

During this phase of the renovation, the Library has neither a PC Lab nor a Library Classroom. There are a few PCs available on the Upper Level near the Reference Desk. There are other PCs on campus.

There is a quiet seating area on the Upper Level behind the Current Periodicals and Reference Collection. There are also study carrels on the Lower Level.

Changes to the location of materials:

  • Circulating book collection (call numbers A - Z) is on the Lower Level.
  • Reference Collection, Hawaiian Collection, Current Periodicals, Periodical Backfiles, and Government Documents are on the Upper Level.
  • Newspapers and the Paperback Collection are on the Upper Level behind the Current Periodicals and Reference Collection.
  • New Books and the Faculty Favorites Collection are near the Reference Desk.
  • DVDs, READ Collection, and Indexes / Abstracts are on the low shelves between the Current Periodicals and the PCs.

Periodical Backfiles List

We have boxed and stored many of our older journals during renovation. A list of what is on the shelves (.pdf) is available. To view this file, you need Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded for free.

Don't forget: if we've boxed a journal you need and it's not available electronically, we'll waive the normal fees to get it from another UH Library. See the November 13, 2006 update for more information.

Update Letter

Friday, January 5, 2007 was the final day of asbestos abatement for the third floor.

Phase I: Renovation of Third Floor is now expected to end approximately the middle of May 2007 with the beginning of Phase II: Renovation of Second Floor (main level) expected to begin approximately six weeks later.

Because all staff currently located on the second floor will have to be relocated to the third floor before the start of Phase II, the Mookini Library will have to be closed for several partial days following finals in Spring 2007. This will be the most effective and least disruptive time to accommodate the mandatory move of staff, collections, and computers from the second floor to the third floor. When the specific dates are established, signage and updates will be available at the Mookini Library Reference and Circulation Desks.

The safety and needs of our students and faculty remain a top priority during the planning and implementation of the renovation. Every effort is being made to continue providing services and access to library materials. We ask for your understanding and support as we move through this renovation project together so that we can have a library that will be more functional, efficient, secure, and attractive to our users.

To compensate for the lack of access to some library materials, increased intra-system borrowing (from other UH Libraries) and interlibrary borrowing (from non-UH libraries) will be provided. The Public Services librarians are knowledgeable concerning our collection, and are ready to provide patron assistance in fully utilizing the core materials of our collection, which will not be placed in storage during the renovation.

More information is available on the pink flyers at the Reference and Circulation Desks.

Loans from Other Libraries

During the library renovation, some of our journals will be placed in storage. Make a Difference Day

On Saturday, October 21, 2006, over a hundred HawCC/UHH students gathered at the Campus Center Cafeteria at 8:30 am to begin a day of volunteer work on campus.  One group of students volunteered to work at the Edwin H. Mookini Library.  Students assisted library staff in moving the bulk of the Government Documents that will be available during the renovation from the third floor to the second floor.  Periodicals, which are also housed on the third floor, will be moved to the first floor with the help of volunteers from the Rotaract and Rotary Clubs next week, Sunday, October 29, 2006.

See some photos from the day!
