Check the Facts

Accuracy is not always easy to detect--when in doubt, verify what you have found by consulting a second source (preferably, something printed by a reputable publisher.)

You must also know the difference between FACT and OPINION.

  • FACTS are statements that can be proven true or false
  • OPINIONS are statements that cannot be proven true or false because they represent a person's point of view

The purpose of writing is to persuade. Some writers use fact and logic, while others employ ambiguity, manipulative reasoning, and "in-your-face" reasoning (e.g., a writer may make a statement, and simply say "that's what the research says...") with no concrete evidence to support the claim.
